"At first I guess my siblings and I were in shock--but now that it's clear that Mom isn't on vacation, we're just tired of her being dead, tired of not being able to call her, or hug her. Her being dead is getting really old. We just want her back. Thanks for listening--sometimes it just helps to talk to someone who understands."

End-Of-Life and Grief Education and Training

I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him.

- Isaiah 57:18

Educating the wider community is a key way to build support for the seriously ill and dying, their caregivers, and the bereaved - and a great beginning step to improving outreach. The following presentations can be tailored to meet the needs of a particular audience.

"Never in my life have I heard a speaker like Eileen Geller. She spoke to my heart -- made me laugh and made me cry. But mostly, she helped me know that I am doing good work in my own community -- and that makes a world of difference!"

Consoling Grace offers a series of 2-3 hour educational forums for participating parishes, schools, or organizations to choose from.

Educational forums such as the following have proved to be popular for all audiences. The question and answer periods of these interactive forums are always lively and illuminating. Possible topics include the following:

  • "What can I do? What Should I say? Practical tips for friends and relatives of an ill or grieving loved one."
  • "Don't forget about the children! What children need to know about death and grief - and how to teach them: A guide for parents, relatives, and teachers."

  • "Your Grandmothers Wisdom meets Compassion-in-Action: how to re-build care-networks in your parish, workplace, and community."

  • "Unlocking Understanding; A Christian Key to Advance Directives."

  • "Earthen Vessels - Enhancing dignity at life's end: A dynamic tutorial answering your questions on suffering, pain control, hospice, and more."

  • "Loving your neighbor AS yourself; Care for the Care-Giver -- healing model for volunteers and staff in faith communities, schools, and residential-care-facilities."

  • "Living with Grief in the Holidays; how to support yourself and others through the toughest times."

Each of these educational forums includes a take home packet, refreshments, and time for individual conversation - attendees often stay after the presentation to ask questions or receive support.

Some faith communities may wish to use the educational forums as a 'building block' to implementing Consoling Grace Grief or Illness Outreach programs.
